In Washington state, the McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that ensures students experiencing housing instability have the same access to a free and appropriate public education as everyone else.
Prohibition on segregation of homeless students- in providing a free and appropriate public education to a homeless child or youth, no State receiving funds under this subtitle shall segregate such child or youth in a separate school, or in a separate program within a school, based on such child's or youth's status as homeless
Who Qualifies for Support?
Under the law, a student is considered "homeless" if they lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes students who are:
-
Sharing housing with others due to loss of housing or economic hardship ("doubling up").
-
Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or campgrounds because they don't have other options.
-
Living in emergency or transitional shelters.
-
Living in cars, parks, public spaces, or abandoned buildings.
-
Unaccompanied youth who are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian.
If you are unsure if you qualify, it is always better to ask. Contact your school’s main office and ask to speak with the McKinney-Vento Liaison. Your information is kept confidential.
